New Year

It's my 2nd day of senior year and I have my grad project / research class first block. I'm glad to have it because it gives me time and opportunity to jump back into my project. I have a lot of things to get done with this project this trimester, I'll keep it all posted.

Did you know?!

Did you know...
*Cannabis has been used by human beings for over 8,000 years? (http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm)

*Hemp fibers are one of the strongest natural fibers on the face of the Earth? (http://www.ecocomposite.org/agfibers/hemp.htm)

*In the 1600's, some farmers could face charges if they DIDN'T grow hemp (it was required by law to grow it)? (http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm)

*The first 2 drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper?(http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm)

*Queen Victoria used cannabis to ease menstrual cramps?(http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm)

*George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln all smoked cannabis? (http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm )

*In 1883, cannabis-smoking parlors opened up all around the United States, as many as 500 were in New York City alone?(http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm)

*Marijuana was outlawed for purely racist and greed-filled reasons?
(during the 1930s, there was a profound hatred of Blacks and Mexicans. Two Men, Harry J. Anslinger and William Randolf Hearst, both hated those groups, and had realized that a lot of them smoked marijuana, and in an effort to rid the Country of Blacks and Mexicans, published false studies in news papers that claimed marijuana induced violent behaviors. The studies also included lines like “Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.” which obviously is ridiculous. The greed factor comes in when William Randolf Hearst owned a large chain of newspapers and invested heavily in the timber industry and feared that hemp paper would run him out of business, he was hitting 2 birds with 1 stone, while at the same time making him rich because these absurd stories sold newspapers. For more info go to http://www.drugwarrant.com/articles/why-is-marijuana-illegal/ )

*contrary to popular belief, there is NO evidence that smoking cannabis causes any type of brain damage at all?(http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/ )

*Over 94 million Americans over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once?(http://yedda.com/questions/marijuana_addiction_record_count_8622273461813/)

Ancient Chinese Proverb

"One who asks a question is a fool for five minutes. One who does not ask a question remains a fool forever"

What does this ancient Chinese proverb mean?
I think it means that the only way to learn something is by asking a question. And that there are no stupid questions.

Changing my Topic

I've decided to change my topic, because i realized that i can't do much research on herpetology because, even though that is my selected career field, there isn't much research in it. It's just simply the study of small reptiles and amphibians. I've decided to change my topic to something else that's a large part of my interests that i could research a lot on - the legalization of marijuana. I'm planning on doing research on the historical uses of cannabis as well as it's stand and use today. I also plan to compare and contrast the possible pros and cons of legalizing the plant.
I also want to compare and contrast its medical, physiological, and behavioral effects versus those of legal substances, like alcohol and tobacco. I am very optimistic about this research component but I am a bit shaky on the action plan, i don't know what to do for it, but I'll just have to keep my eyes and ears open for an idea.

Herpetology

People: Karl Patterson Schmidt - was a very important American herpetologist.
Donald Schultz - a more known herpetologist for his TV series "Wild Recon" on Animal Planet. Started out with a daredevil stunt which he was placed in a glass room in Las Vegas with 100 deadly snakes for 10 days, called Venom in Vegas

Key Places: anywhere that is biologically diverse or supports amphibians and reptiles. Costa Rica is a good example of a place with high biodiversity especially in reptiles and amphibians.

Concepts: study of small reptiles and amphibians. (frogs, newts, salamanders, lizards, snakes [venomous and nonvenomous])
